Spinner as Treasurer of The United States. Although the President's Signature is light and faded, the Cashier of the Bank was A. Pettibone and the Bank President was W.
"The Citizens National Bank of Indianapolis, Indiana" was organized in 1864. When the Banks 20 year Charter ended.
The total issue of Large Size notes was 181,164 banknotes. This National Bank went out early, it only survived 20 years.
When it closed, the other National Banks would have made a concerted effort to remove this banks' outstanding banknotes from circulation. The National Currency System would have another 25 years to redeem outstanding National Banknotes from this Bank. Then more would have been redeemed after 1935! It is for those reasons that Notes from this Bank are likely to remain scarce! There were 18 National Banks that issued National Currency in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Seventeen of those banks issued Large Size Notes, and only 7 of those banks had fewer notes reported than this one! The note has ample margins all around for an early note! There are two paper pulls on the reverse of the note, leaving a white area that is missing some of the black printing on the reverse vignette. One of the paper pulls has left a 1/16" x 1/8" hole in the note!
All four margins are a little ratty with numerous 1/8 of an inch or less splits all around. There is one 3/16 split in the right margin at the centerfold. There are some pinholes mostly in the center of the note, three of which are a little larger. The Red Ink in the serial numbers is slightly faded with age. Lastly, I see some minor staining that is visible on the reverse of the note. Almost every surviving Note from this Bank has some kind of issues!
The Kelly Census shows 12 large size notes reported on this bank. All the currently reported notes from this bank are early Original Series 1863 Notes. The paper used on these notes was much thinner and fragile than what was used on later notes. It's like a cross between the paper used on Obsoletes and the stronger paper (with more rag content) that was used on Series 1883 notes. It is probably for this reason that many of the known notes from this bank are low grade and have issues. Of the 12 notes in the National Banknote Census, 9 are in grades of Fine or less! This note has already been reported in the Kelly Census and is part of the 12 reported notes.
This note would make a fine addition to any Indiana National Banknote collection! This bank was located in Marion County, so it should appeal to people collecting National Banknotes from that and the surrounding counties.
This note should also appeal to people who collect Aces from other states. Don't let this note get away! Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or if you need a better scan of the item.
